EUROPEAN REFUGEE FUND (ERF) – ACTION TO SUPPORT UNACCOMPANIED MINORS

This action is part of STEGI programme and refers to actions for unaccompanied minors who are found in Greece, usually under poor and precarious conditions. By unaccompanied minors, we mean people who are under 18 years of age, and who have entered the country without the company of either of their parent or a guardian - adult responsible for them. It is a particularly vulnerable group, often victimised by all forms of exploitation (e.g. sexual exploitation, child labour, etc.).
Two groups have been set up for identifying and outreach unaccompanied minors in Athens and Thessaloniki. These groups consist of social scientists (social workers, sociologists), psychologists, doctors, nurses and interpreters. The groups conduct streetwork on a daily basis, both in Athens and Thessaloniki in areas which have been previously mapped regarding the presence of unaccompanied minors there.
Through streetwork, these teams of PRAKSIS approach underage individuals and try to build a bridge of trust. The minors are invited to PRAKSIS infrastructures in Athens and Thessaloniki, where they receive further assistance in legal, medical, psychosocial, housing, clothing: In the Polyclinics and the Drop-In Centre and the Day Centres of PRAKSIS, minors are examined and informed as to their vaccination needs, whereas they are also served by lawyers and social scientists. Where appropriate, links with and referrals to other entities are carried out such as referrals to accommodation centres for unaccompanied minors, etc.
