PUBLIC HEALTH (Athens-Thessaloniki)

Mass awareness of target population groups about the prevention methods

PUBLIC HEALTH (Athens-Thessaloniki)

PRAKSIS, aiming at preventing diseases and promoting public health has been implementing relevant programmes in the greater areas of Athens and Thessaloniki. The core of these programmes is PRAKSIS Polyclinics. The programs main goal is to inform and improve the living conditions of socially vulnerable groups (migrants, street children, Roma, homeless, drug users, sex workers etc) as well as to promote public health.

Within the framework of this programme which is implementing as a basic tool the method of social work in the street (streetwork), on-site visits are carried out at locations these groups live or work, such as settlements or shelters. This method safeguards direct approach with the specific groups; a face to face contact so as to advise them on health and hygiene issues. Moreover, the activities include distribution of relevant leaflets - on contagious diseases, tips on hygiene rules etc and distribution of kits with personal hygiene items.

Part of the program consists the establishment of a network between PRAKSIS and other organizations and agencies for broader dissemination of the actions and the more targeted and successful implementation. PRAKSIS, in collaboration with the Therapy Centres of Dependent Individuals (KETHEA) Diavasi in Athens and Ithaci in Thessaloniki, organize seminars for drug users on harm reduction techniques of drug usage, protection against HCV, HBV and HIV, First Aid, the effects of substances etc. The participation in these seminars is estimated to more than 200 people annually.

There are updated information and awareness sessions on a regular basis, on hygiene matters and contagious diseases, at hostels where vulnerable social groups stay, as well as sessions regarding the issuance of health cards needed for enrolment at schools by PRAKSIS pediatricians (after corresponding invitation), and vaccinations. We also inform communities and clubs of economic migrants on gynecological issues, pregnancy and contraception.

Furthermore, PRAKSIS – within the framework of the actions for Public Health "ASK FIRST", deploys Mobile Units in Athens, Thessaloniki and other cities of Greece to inform people about the HIV and Hepatitis and to encourage the relevant medical examination with a free, quick and anonymous oral rapid test (using saliva) for HIV and Hepatitis C. The test result is reportable in twenty minutes. This examination covers all persons who have an active sexual life, especially those adopting high-risk sexual behaviors and of course anyone who wishes to be tested.

Moreover PRAKSIS implements outreach programs for hepatitis A, B, C and HIV through the telephone line (800 11 11 600), in operation on a daily basis, in order to provide information on the transmission of the viruses, prevention, and testing. The hotline is staffed by trained professionals. The phone call is free and anonymous.
